that makes the pattern understandable.
• Feelings are often an important sources of
information , which susceptible to bias, distortion
and misunderstandings.
• Intuition is a preconscious process in which the
person has a strong feeling about how something
will turn out but does not know how the conclusions
were determined.

interpersonal relationships, group skills as well as
leadership skills.
• Some people are worried that participating in a
growth group will generate some levels of anxiety
that will affect them psychologically.
• Study by Johnson, Kavanagh and Lubin proved
that participating in a growth group seems to be
less stressful that taking the course examinations.
Costs of Growth
and Therapy Groups
• Growth and therapy groups have costs as
well as benefits.
• Considerable amount of time and energy.
• Bad experiences and find the group useless
• Drop outs because of more harms than
benefits
• Need for a skilled facilitator
Comparative Effectiveness
• Effectiveness means the degree to which objectives are
achieved and the extent to which targeted problems are
resolved.
• Study by Lieberman, Yalom and Miles (1973) proved that
no one group approach was found to be superior to the
others.
• The Fuhriman and Burlingame (1994) study concluded that
group methods are quite effective but that no one method is
more effective than others.
• McRoberts, Burlingame and Hoag (1998) study concluded
that group psychotherapy was quite effective, but no more so
than was individual therapy meaning they are equally
effective.
• The Bernard and Kaul study (1994) concluded that group
treatments were more effective than no treatment or other
recognized psychological treatments.
Summary
• People participate in groups with the purpose of increasing selfenhancing patterns of behavior, psychological health, improving
humanistic relationship, increasing self-actualization and
interpersonal effectiveness. Different groups are created for this
purpose.
• Although participants in a growth, therapy or self-help group
may result in significant health-producing experience, a skilled
group facilitator is needed to oversee the process.
• As a conclusion, all sorts of growth and counseling groups are
effective but no one approach seems to be more effective than
any others.
