P1: CONTAGIOUS RISK PERCEPTION
GAISSMAIER
Background & Preliminary Work
Risk perception is mostly studied at the
level of the individual.
Yet risk perception underlies important
social dynamics.
How do risk perceptions
through social networks?
spread

Work Package 1
Research Questions:
• How do people pass on information about risk (exposure)?
• What is the moderating role of preparedness in this regard and with
regard to risk perception and preventive behaviors (coping)?
• What are the social dynamics of risk perception in groups with
homogeneous preparedness?
Main Predictions:
• Preparedness distorts exposure to fit to preparedness, with the original
message eventually having a negligible impact on coping.
• Simulations predict a polarizing effect of exposure on the population;
biased initial judgments become more extreme at the end of chains of
like-minded individuals.

Work Package 2
Research Question:
• Can effective methods of risk communication – here: visual displays –
help alleviate distortions of the message?
Main predictions:
• The message is transmitted more consistently.
• The impact of the focal message (exposure) on coping is enhanced
compared to the impact of preparedness.

Work Package 3
Research Question:
• How do social dynamics of risk perception actually unfold within a
naturally existing social network?
Main Predictions:
• Social proximity predicts the transmission and adoption of risk
perceptions and preventive behaviors.
• Affective and narrative information spreads more strongly than
statistical information.
