Finn Terms to Know
Romanticism
19th Century literary movement that focused
on:
imagination, emotion, nature, individuality, and
exotica (meaning strange characters or
locals)
Realism
 Reacts against romanticism
 Tries to write objectively about ordinary
characters in ordinary situations
 The realist utilizes local color or regionalism
to make their stories “real”
Local Color or Regionalism
 Writing that utilizes dialect, customs,
clothing, manners, attitudes, beliefs,
superstitions and landscape of a specific
area.
 Some argue that the regionalism is a bit
more sophisticated than local color in that it
deals with sociological and anthropological
aspects of culture but they are virtually the
same thing
Dialect
 The form of a language spoken by people in
a particular region or group.
Satire
 Writing that ridicules or criticizes individuals,
ideas, institutions, social conventions, and
other works of art or literature (the idea is to
bring about change or broaden awareness
thus promoting change).
 Satire is persuasive—it examines foolish
behavior.
 Holds nothing sacred—it has been used
against any target, even if it is offensive.
