Materials Needed
Structures and Functions in Living Systems
graphic organizer-copy the notes that are
highlighted in green throughout the ppt.
The notes in blue will go on the back of
your worksheet.
See slide #15, draw, label & color a picture of
an animal cell on the worksheet “Living Things
Are Made of These”, last page, question #8
Pencil, colored pencils
Cell Membrane (gatekeeper)
Semi-permeable
Controls what enters and leaves the
cell
Gas exchange
(similar function to
lungs in your body)

Nucleus (Brain/Control Ctr.)
Controls the activities of the cell
Holds the genetic material (DNA)
Contains genes (made of DNA) on 46
chromosomes. Thousands of strands of
DNA can fit onto one chromosome. These
have all the instructions for your body.

Cytoplasm
Fluid that fills cells
Site of many cellular reactions
Organelles – Units
in cells that have
different functions

Mitochondria (Powerhouse)
Site of respiration, where glucose is
broken down into cellular energy
Active animal cells have
more mitochondria
than plant cells
Vacuoles
Store food, water or wastes
VERY small in animal cells. VERY large in
plant cells. Contains fluid.

Lysosomes (trash collector)
Used to digest food or dissolve wastes
(you don’t want it to burst)
Very common in animal cells but rare in
plant cells.

Ribosomes
Make proteins.
Found in cytoplasm and Rough ER.
Ribosomes are made up of two layers.

/BIOBK/ribosome.gif
Endoplasmic Reticulum “ER”
Rough ER: Transports proteins (like a
highway). Has ribosomes.
Smooth ER: Collects and stores
proteins.

s/er.jpg
Golgi Complex (factory)
Builds lysosomes
Stores and packages proteins

Centrioles
Helps the cell divide.
They can’t be seen when the cell is
not dividing.

Nucleolus
Produces ribosomes, which move out of
the nucleus to the rough ER
