MITOSIS
EUKARYOTIC CELLS
(plant and animal cells)
•50,000 of the cells in your body will die and be
replaced with new cells, all while you have been
reading this sentence!
•It takes about 8 hours for one of your cells to
completely copy its DNA.
•One single cell contains two meters of DNA.
INTERPHASE: Before Mitosis
begins
• Chromosomes and
other cell materials
are copied.
• Centrioles appear
• Chromosomes are
now 2 chromatids

PROPHASE
• Nucleus breaks
apart.
• Centrioles move to
opposite sides of
the cell
• Fibers form and
attach to the
centromeres

Prometaphase
METAPHASE
• Chromosomes
line up along
the equator
(middle) of the
cell

ANAPHASE
• Chromatids
separate and are
pulled to opposite
sides of the cell
by the fibers.

TELOPHASE
• Nucleus forms around
the chromosomes
• Chromosomes unwind
• Fibers disappear
• MITOSIS IS COMPLETE

AFTER MITOSIS-CYTOKINESIS
• Cytoplasm splits in two
• Two identical cells are
formed
• The Eukaryotic cell
cycle is complete
