Learning Targets
“I Can…”
-Define “selective permeability.”
-Model a living cell by using dialysis tubing
in a liquid medium.
- Predict the results of an experiment that
involves animal cells rather than plant
cells.
Membrane Transport Lab
The cell membrane is selectively
permeable
• What does it mean to be “selectively
permeable”?
Some molecules move easily through the
membrane using diffusion, while other
molecules cannot move through the
membrane.
Diffusion through a selectively
permeable membrane . . .
What you will do?
• Add the following substances to a section
of dialysis tubing . . .
– Starch
– Glucose
– Albumin (egg white)
– Oil
This will represent the “cell.”
What you will do?
• Add the dialysis tubing to a beaker of
iodine
This will represent “outside the cell.”
