4-1: The History of Cell Biology



Both living and nonliving things are made up of
molecules of C, H, O, + N
Organization of molecules separates living from
nonliving
Cell – smallest unit of matter that can carry on
all the processes of life
Discovery of the Cell

1665 – Robert Hooke examined a piece of
cork and called the “little boxes” CELLS
CORK

Anton van Leeuwenhoek – identified the
first living cell using a microscope

Microorganisms – called them animalcules
(PROTISTS)
Cell Theory

Hooke + Leeuwenhoek observations of
cells became more realistic 150 year
later…



1838 - Matthias Schleiden – concluded that all
plants are made up of cells
1839 – Theodor Schwann – concluded that all
animals are made up of cells
1855 – Rudolf Virchow – studied diseases and
concluded that cells come from other cells
The Cell Theory

Scientists unified Hooke’s +
Leeuwenhoek’s observations into the Cell
Theory:



All living things are composed of one or more
cells
Cells are the basic unit of structure + function
in an organism
Cells come from only the reproduction of
existing cells
