Was the DEK1 protein key to the three-dimensional
body patterning in plants?
The evolution of apical meristematic cells capable to divide in more than
two cutting faces enabled to incease plant morphological complexity and
facilitated the trasition from water to land. Precise positioning of the cell
division plane, cell wall expansion and cell fate specification became
critical for plant morphogenesis and three-dimensional growth. In this talk,
I will present the membrane-anchored calpain protease DEK1, which we
believe enabled cells to sense and interpret positional information and so to
control the morphogenetic cell divisions. The model systems for molecular
and cellular dissection of the DEK1-mediated morphogenesis will be
discussed.
