The most controversial practice for raising
money for the Catholic Church was the practice
of selling indulgences.
The idea was based on the fact that a sinner could
work to reduce his/her years in purgatory.
When a person sinned, they could confess and
perform a good deed or they could purchase an
indulgence.
Some clergy members taught that salvation could be
achieved through the purchase of an indulgence.
