Nicene Creed
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of
heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe
in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally
begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true
God from true God, begotten, not made, one in Being with the
Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for
our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the
Holy Spirit he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered,
died, and was buried. On the third day he rose again in
fulfillment of the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in
glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have
no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father
and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken
through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and
apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the
forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Catholic, Apostolic
Chapter 3
Lesson 3
Review from yesterday
What are the first two marks of the church?
One: in belief, worship, and government
Holy: in means, members, origin, purpose,
and sacraments
Today we will learn how the Church is catholic
and apostolic.
We are called Catholics. Why are
we not called merely Christians like
members of Protestant
denominations?
Catholic is one of the four marks of the
Church. “Catholic” means “universal.”
How is this seen in our Church?
We have the fullness of Christ’s truth and
revelation:
1. This is found in Scripture and Tradition
2. This is safeguarded and taught by the
Magisterium
This faith (and Church) is for all
people of all places:
1. If we go to Europe, Asia, South America, or
Timbuktu the faith will be the same.
2. The mass will be the same, we have the
same Pope, etc.
The faith (and Church) is for all
times.
1. Jesus didn’t just save the people in his
time but established the Church so that all
people can know him and his salvation
until the end of time.
How is the Church apostolic?
The Church originated with the apostles (upon
who Christ built his Church)
The Church is still ruled by the successors of
Peter and the apostles (Pope and all bishops)
Holy Orders can be traced back to the apostles,
meaning they have the powers necessary to
continue Jesus’ saving work (hear confessions
and absolve sins, consecrate the Eucharist, etc.).
This is called apostolic succession.
What can you do to promote the
universality and apostolicity of the
Church?
Universality: pray for missionaries, pray with
your family
Apostolicity: pray for the Pope, Pray for
priests
