The Twelve
Olympians

In the Ancient Greek religion
the Twelve Olympians were
mostly considered Zeus, Hera,
Poseidon, Demeter, Athena,
Apollo, Artemis, Ares,
Aphrodite, Hephaestus, Hermes,
and Dionysus.
In this PowerPoint you will
learn about all those gods and
goddesses.
1. Zeus
He is the king of all gods
and ruler of Mount
Olympus. Zeus is also the
god of the sky, lightning,
thunder, law, order, and
justice. He is the youngest
child of the Titans Cronus
and Rhea. His symbols
include thunder bolt,
eagle, oak tree, scepter,
and scales.
2. Hera
She is the queen of the
gods and goddesses of
marriage and family.
Being the god of
marriage she frequently
tried to get revenge on
Zeus' lovers and their
children. Her symbols
include peacock,
pomegranate, crown,
cuckoo, lion, and cow.
3. Poseidon
He is god of the seas,
earthquakes, and tidal
wave. He is the middle
son of Cronus and Rhea
and brother with Zeus
and Hades. Married to
Nereid Amphitrite,
although like many other
male Greek gods he had
many lovers. Symbols
include horse, bull,
dolphin, and trident.
4. Demeter
Is another of the
middle children of
Cronus and Rhea.
She is goddess of
fertility, agriculture,
nature, and the
seasons. Symbols
include the poppy,
wheat, torch, and
pig.
5. Athena
She is goddess of wisdom,
handicrafts, defense, and
strategic warfare. Is
daughter of Zeus and
Oceanid Metis. She rose
from her father's full
grown head and in full
battle armor after he
swallowed her mother.
Symbols include the owl,
and the olive tree.
6. Apollo
Apollo is the god of light,
knowledge, healing,
plague, darkness, arts,
music, poetry, prophecy,
archery, the sun, and
mainly youth and beauty.
Son of Zeus and Leto.
Twin brother of Artemis.
Symbols include the sun,
lyre, bow and arrow,
raven, dolphin, wolf,
swan, and mouse.
7. Artemis
She is the god of the hunt,
virginity, archery, the
moon, and all animals.
Daughter of Zeus and
Leto and twin sister of
Apollo. Symbols include
moon, deer, hound, shebear, snake, cypress tree,
and bow and arrow.
8. Ares
He is son of Zeus and Hera.
All the other gods (except
Aphrodite) despised him.
His roman name, Mars,
gave us the word "martial."
Ares is the god of war,
violence, and bloodshed.
Symbols include boar,
serpent, dog, vulture,
spear, and sheild.
9. Aphrodite
Daughter of Zeus and
Oceanid Dionde, or perhaps
from the sea after Uranus
dripped into the sea. Married
to Hephaestus. Her name
gave us the word
"aphrodisiac," while her roman
name, Venus, gave us the
word "venereal." She is the
goddess of love, beauty, and
desire. Symbols include the
dove, bird, apple, bee, swan,
myrtle, and rose.

Hephaestus
Son of Hera, either by Zeus
or alone. Married to
Aphrodite, though unlike
other divine husbands he
didn't respect her. His
roman name gave us the
word "volcano". Master
blacksmith and craftsman
of the gods: god of fire
and the forge. Symbols
include fire, anvil, axe,
donkey, hammer, tongs,
and quail.
11. Hermes
Son of Zeus and the
nymph Maia. is the
second youngest
Olympian , he is just older
than Dionysus. Hermes is
the messenger of the
gods. Those include god
of commerce, thieves,
and games. Symbols
include caduceus (staff
entwined with two
snakes), winged sandals,
cap, stork, and tortoise.
12. Dionysus
Dionysus is the god of wine,
celebrations, and ecstasy.
Patron god of the art of
theatre. Son of Zeus and the
mortal Theban princesses
Semele. The youngest
Olympian god, as well as the
only one to have a mortal
mother. Symbols include the
grapevine, ivy, cup, tiger,
panther, leopard, dolphin,
and pinecone.
