Understanding CAPD
Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) refers to
an impairment in one's ability to understand spoken
language.
Individuals with CAPD may have normal hearing.
Something in the brain inhibits them from accurately
processing auditory information.
Understanding CAPD
Individuals with CAPD may...
Struggle to follow more than
one direction simultaneously.
Misunderstand words spoken aloud.
Have problems deciphering between words and letter
sounds.
Require that information be repeated.
Tools to Accommodate for CAPD
Variable speech control tape recorder (VSC): This tool allows users to
replay audio taped material at a slower or faster pace than it was
originally recorded.
Basic tape recorders/audio cassette recorders: This is an effective tool for
recording notes and replaying taped books. Users can listen to a
taped textbook while simultaneously tracking identical material in
printed form.
Books on disc: When uploaded to a computer with a voice synthesizer,
auditory input is supported by visual input for individuals with auditory
processing challenges.
