The Korean Peninsula
Geography
• The Korean Peninsula is mountainous
• Most people live in coastal plains or river
valleys.
• In South Korea, the southern & western plains
are important for farming.
• North Korea is more mountainous and has less
agricultural land.
Climate
• South Korea’s climate has hot, humid
summers & cold, dry winters.
• North Korea’s climate is generally colder and
wetter than South Korea.
• Typhoons can bring heavy rain and flooding to
both countries.
Natural Resources
South Korea
• Main natural resources are iron, copper, and
coal.
• Import most of raw materials
• Highly industrialized economy
– Ship building, steel, electronics, & automobiles are
the main industries.

• Produces a lot of military equipment
• Weak economy

After WWII, Korea was split into 2 countries.
North Korea is communist.
South Korea is democratic.
From 1950-1953, the two Koreas fought in the
Korean War.

DMZ
• After the war, a demilitarized zone (DMZ), or
neutral area was created between North and
South Korea.
• The DMZ is 150 miles long and 2.5 miles wide.
• Soldiers patrol the land at all times.
• American soldiers are also stationed at the
DMZ to help South Korean soldiers patrol and
in case conflict should occur.

• Regulation says tourists can’t wear jeans with
holes in them. The reason according to tour
guides, is that the North Koreans might take
pictures of the tourists and use them as
propaganda to say that people from
democratic societies are poor and can’t afford
proper clothes.

Flagpole War
• The North put up a flagpole just outside the
DMZ, the South then put one up that was
taller. Then the North made theirs taller. This
went back and forth.
• The North’s flagpole is currently 524 ft tall
• The South’s flagpole is currently 328 ft tall

• The North has been known to dig tunnels ‘in
preparation for an invasion. 4 have been
discovered so far.

• Because of its isolation, lots of plant and
animal species thrive in the narrow coast to
coast zone. Several endangered species can be
found and people have even reported seeing
the rare Siberian tiger.
