do the following:
• Identify a word's root word and affix, that is, its prefix or suffix
• Put events in a story in proper sequence
• Identify and discuss elements of fiction: plot,
character, theme, setting, point of view, conflict, tone,
and style
• Identify, define, and effectively use articles,
adjectives, and adverbs
* Identify and use suspense techniques
* Compare and contrast literary works and
characters

It was about four in the morning when my police
buddies, Norm and Stan, and I were sitting around the police
station. We heard a rap at the door. It was a lady in her night
dress. She was distraught because she heard a shriek coming
from her neighbor’s house around one in the morning at 133
Horrified Lane. We get these reports a lot. Frantic citizens are a
dime a dozen these days! My buddies and I grabbed a doughnut
and headed on over there.
We knocked soundly on the door and were greeted by a
young man presumed to be the butler dressed properly in a shirt
and pants, strange for the middle of the night! He welcomed us
heartily and ushered us into the house. We told him about the
reported scream, and he offered to let us search the premises,
even without a warrant! We looked upstairs and down; we
searched the servant’s quarters, bathroom, living room, and old
man’s room. We found nothing suspicious.

Look at the following excerpt of a story:
Soon after dark they arrived, and gave me a most cordial welcome. Jupiter, grinning
from ear to ear, bustled about to prepare some marsh-hens2 for supper. Legrand was
1
in one of his fits -- how else shall I term them? -- of enthusiasm. He had found an
unknown bivalve, forming a new genus, and, more than this, he had hunted down
3
and secured, with Jupiter's assistance, a4 scarabaeus which he believed to be totally
5
new, but in respect to which he wished to have my opinion on the morrow.~from
Poe's "Gold Bug“
What do the superscript numbers in red mean?
The footnotes may look like this:
1. hyperbole- an exaggeration- “grinning from ear to ear”
2. marsh-hens: (noun) is a bird of the inhabiting wetlands and
open water bodies
3. bivalve: (noun) an insect having a shell composed of two
movable valves
4. genus: (noun) a category of classification in biology that ranks
between the family and the species
5. scarabaeus: (noun) any of a family of stout-bodied beetles with
lamellate or fan-shaped antennae
If they were at the end of the story, they are called endnotes.
