Trench Warfare
WWI
You will be reporting on a battle taking place
during the Great War (remember that maps are
an essential part of reporting). You will use
resources to interview a soldier living in the
trenches on the front. Make sure you answer all
the questions below. Your completed mission will
include a newspaper article formatted like an
actual newspaper of "A Soldier's Day"
describing life in the trenches, a description of
the selected battle (including maps), and a
poster or cartoon of how Americans supported
the war. This quest will help you understand the
war from the point of view of soldiers in the
trenches through analysis of photographs,
propaganda posters, political cartoons, war
poetry and memoirs. EVERYTHING IS TO BE
COMPLETED ON 8 × 11 PAPER.
You are a foreign correspondent for CNN News
Service. The editor is sending you to the front lines
for live interviews, action shots and a report on the
life experiences of soldiers on the front.
Explain what trench warfare is like from the soldiers
point of view. How does warfare affect the soldiers?
Interview a “soldier” using the memoir information that
you find as your source of what it is like to be a soldier
in the trenches.

4. Either a propaganda poster, political cartoon,
song lyrics, or poetry from the era must also be
included. An explanation of how one of the above
reflects the attitude of society towards the war.
