Constant Fear
Stalin had secret police
called the “GULAG”
The gulag monitored
telephone lines, read mail
and had informers
People lived in constant
fear of being an “enemy of
the country”
Those that were found
guilty were imprisoned and
sent to forced labor camps
The Great
Purge
1934: Stalin wanted to consolidate power into his
hands so he began the “Great Purge”
Great Purge: elimination of anyone who was a threat
to Stalin’s power
Stalin’s Great Purge was responsible for 8 to 13
million deaths
