4th Six Weeks Unit Vocabulary
• On the next 2 slides, what do you think all
these stories/images have in common?
Vocabulary
1. Dystopia (anti-utopia): an imaginary place
where people lead dehumanized and often
fearful lives.
NOTE: An anti-utopia is a society that pretends
to be a utopia and fair place (but really isn’t). A
dystopia does not pretend to be anything else
but what it is.

• So if a dystopia is a place that does not
pretend to be good and is controlled by
government, then what is a utopia?
2. Utopia: a place of ideal perfection
especially in laws, government, and social
conditions

3. Totalitarianism: political
concept that the citizens
should be totally subject
to an absolute state
authority.

books, movies, etc., and suppressing unacceptable
parts. The suppression or proscription of speech or
writing that is deemed obscene, indecent, or unduly
controversial.
Dystopian Qualities
• Propaganda is used to control the citizens of society.
• Information, independent thought, and freedom are
restricted.
• A figurehead or concept is worshipped by the citizens of
the society.
• Citizens are perceived to be under constant surveillance.
• Citizens have a fear of the outside world.
• Citizens live in a dehumanized state.
• The natural world is banished and distrusted.
• Citizens conform to uniform expectations. Individuality
and dissent are bad.
• The society is an illusion of a perfect utopian world.
