Evacuation Floor Plans are posted on every floor
Tornado Safe areas are also posted on every floor
Take note of the location of your work area or office
and the nearest emergency exit and the Tornado Safe
Area
But keep in mind where the location of all the exits and
Tornado safe areas are on your floor and/or building
Important Drill Points to Keep in
Mind
Fire Alarm and Fire Safe Doors
•
•
•
•
•
The alarm is VERY loud and unmistakable
The flashing lights are ADA compliant for the hearing
impaired
All the hallway doors close when the alarm goes off,
but they are not locked
Exit signs are above the doors so you know you are
going in the right direction and not into a blocked area
These doors are fire rated, therefore keeps the
possible fire containable for a longer period of time
Physically Disabled Evacuations
Do not attempt to carry him/her down the
stairs.
Find a safe place for them to wait, preferably
near an emergency exit or in a landing of the
stairwell.
Someone should wait with them to alleviate
their fears while having another staff member
alert the emergency personnel (police or fire
department) of the location of the person that
needs assistance
How to Use a Fire Extinguisher
Remember “P.A.S.S”
• P = Pull the Ring
• A = Aim the hose at the base of the fire
• S = Squeeze the trigger gently
• S = Sweep the hose from right to left at the
base of the fire

the Fire Drill in a timely manner
All staff, however are responsible for ensuring
that their participants and visitors evacuate
the building
Evacuation During a Fire Drill or
Fire Emergency
The most important thing to remember is
when you hear the alarm, you must
evacuate the building
Announcements will not be heard over
the loud alarm
You will be given the “All Clear” when it’s
safe to come back into the building.
Evacuation During a Fire Drill or
Fire Emergency
The 2nd through 6th floors have 4
emergency stairwells, one at the end of
each wing, and two in the center
sections
There are a total of 8 exits on the 1st
floor
The Residential Group Homes have at
least two exits
Stairwells and their Locations
Stairwell A = Is located across from most
of the reception areas on floors 2
through 6. This exit leads down to the
1st floor close to the passenger
elevators. The closest exit is the Kedzie
area, however you must cross Haddon
Street and keep the Kedzie entrance
clear for fire and police departments.
Stairwells and their Locations
Stairwell B = is located at the far end of
the east wings. This exit leads down to
the 1st floor to an outside egress that
opens to the Thomas parking lot. The
other exit is by the Thomas reception.
Stairwells and their Locations
Stairwell C = is close to the center areas
near the freight elevator and leads down
to the 1st floor. There are two closest fire
exits at either end of the hallway, one
leads out to Haddon Street, and the
other to the alley behind the building
(access to the parking lot through the
alley)
Stairwells and their Locations
Stairwell D = is located in the far end of
the west wing of the building, which
leads down to the 1st floor near the
employee entrance to the parking lot, a
fire exit is also located behind the
stairwell, which leads out to Haddon
Street.
Stairwells and their Locations
Stairwell E = begins on the 3rd floor and is
located behind the Chapel. This exit leads
down toward the boiler room and has direct
access to the employee parking lot
There is also a fire exit located in the cafeteria
and in the hallway by the cafeteria which leads
into the alley behind the Agency. You can
either proceed to Thomas Street or the
employee parking lot via the alley
During Evacuations
Knock on doors and make sure everyone has
heard the fire alarm or evacuation
announcement
Help participants and staff who are in need of
extra assistance such as FLP, LSE, PSR
Evacuate in an orderly manner
Walk down the stairwells in a single file on the
right hand side
Exit the building, cross the side streets and
wait there.
During Evacuations
Do not panic
Do not use the elevators
Do not cross Kedzie Blvd. (We want to
keep staff, participants and visitors as
safe as possible
DO NOT block the Kedzie entrance as
this is the primary entry way for the Fire
and Police Department.

Bomb Threat Drills
Bomb Threat Drill Basics
Bomb Threat Drills take place annually
and are either announced or the alarm is
activated.
A bomb threat may be called into any
Agency Program, Department or Site so
all staff must be aware of the protocols
Bomb threat Important Points to
Remember
Specific instructions will be announced
You must listen carefully to the
instructions which will tell you the
specific area to evacuate through
For example, “Please evacuate using
west wing exits”
Bomb Threat Important Points
to Remember
Building Monitors will check all areas to
alert staff and participants to evacuate
All staff upon hearing the announcement
or alarm must evacuate the building
immediately to the designated areas.
Bomb Threat Important Points
to Remember
Use the same evacuation exits as the Fire Drill
evacuations, keeping in mind any instructions
you may have heard.
Even after hearing specific instructions keep
an eye out for any suspicious packages, bags,
boxes, etc.
If you do see something: DO NOT TOUCH IT!!
Note the location and tell someone in authority
once you have evacuated.
Bomb Threat Checklist
All staff must be prepared to respond to
a “Bomb Threat Checklist” nearby.
Staff members who receive a call should
try to remain as calm as possible.
Try to keep the caller on the line and
gather as much information as possible
Alert another staff member to notify a
Division Director of the situation.
Universal Precautions
What are Universal Precautions
When direct contact with blood or other body fluids is
unavoidable.
Protective measures are taken with all individuals
whether or not they are known to have a communicable
disease
Avoid direct contact with blood or other bodily fluids.
If contact cannot be avoided latex gloves should be worn,
if splatter is a possibility then goggles and mask should
be worn as well
Staff should use good judgment and lean toward
overprotection as opposed to insufficient protection
Examples of When to Use
Universal Precautions
Dressing a wound
Caring for an individual who is vomiting
Changing a diaper
Treating a nose bleed
Universal Precautions
Guidelines
Routine Hand washing: before and after
direct contact with blood or other body fluids.
Using protective gloves: before handling
infectious waste and before providing care that
may involve direct contact with blood or other
body fluids.
Handling infection waste appropriately:
Dispose of needles and sharps in marked,
sealed containers. Dispose of cleaning
materials and other contaminated waste in
properly sealed containers.
Bloodborne Pathogens
There are a variety of diseases
transmitted through bodily fluids.
Minimize your risk of exposure to these
bloodborne pathogens by wearing
appropriate personal protective
equipment. Protect your eyes, mouth,
mucous membranes and non-intact skin
that comes in contact with blood.
If accidentally exposed:
Wash the exposed area with soap and
running water. Use non-abrasive,
antibacterial soap if possible.
If the exposure is to the eyes or mucous
membranes, flush the affected area with
running water for at least 15 minutes
Report the exposure to Human
Resources for Workers Compensation
Cleaning a Blood Spill
Gloves must be worn while cleaning a blood
spill.
Antibacterial cleaning solution, such as
partially diluted bleach, must be sprayed onto
the contaminated area once the blood is
removed and should be left to air dry.
Blood spills and cleaning materials should be
sealed in the red plastic bag marked
“hazardous waste”
Spill Kits
To be used to clean vomit
Kit should contain:
• Gloves
• Powdered absorbent
• Surface wipe and paper towel
• Red Hazardous waste bag
• Antiseptic hand cleaner
First Aid Kits and Spill Kits
Both are available at every site
•
•
Reception areas in the main building
On every floor in the residential buildings
Programs such as PSR, LSE, and the PED
have their own first aid and spill kits in their
areas
First Aid and Spill Kits should be inventoried
every month. Missing supplies will be provided
by the Facilities Department via the First
Aid/Spill Kit request form
Personal Safety Tips from the
Chicago Police Dept and AHC
Safety in the Parking Lot
Keep your cell phone charged and with
you.
Be aware of your surroundings even in
the daylight hours.
Look around and inside your car before
entering and have your keys ready
After work or after hours ask for an
escort to your car
Safety After Hours
Avoid working after regular business hours.
If this is unavoidable, alert others and the 1st
floor reception. Then shut and lock your door.
Inform 1st floor reception and others when you
leave.
If you know you will be working late, park your
car close to the building when possible
Safety After Hours cont
1st floor reception closes down at 8 pm. If you are
working past that hour, page maintenance and let them
know that you are still in the building.
Keep in mind that you must leave the building by 10:30
pm at the latest. Page maintenance when you leave so
they are not looking for you to ensure that the building is
empty, if you feel you need an escort you can ask
maintenance.
Your division may have a safety plan addressing
working after hours. Learn and follow it.
Safety in the Elevator
Before using the elevator, look at the persons occupying
the elevator and the people waiting around you. If you
are uneasy, wait for the next elevator.
If you notice the person in the elevator hasn’t pushed a
floor button, do not get off at your floor. Go back to the
lobby and report suspicious activity
Stand near control buttons, if attacked or threatened, use
the elevator phone and push 2 or 3 floor buttons – DON’T
touch the stop lever on the panel!
Above all don’t ignore your natural instincts for danger.
Safety and Visitors
Staff should wear their AHC ID badges
so that others can see it.
Employees are responsible for the safety
and conduct of their visitors
If you observe an unfamiliar visitor, notify
your supervisor or if necessary, direct
the visitor to the receptionist
Access Control Plan
Visitors and participants and volunteers must
sign in with the 1st floor receptionists and
indicate who they are there to see.
Those not required to sign in are staff,
Participants accompanied by staff, Food pantry
participants, LSE participants, TTC
Participants, Teen and LISTO participants,
ECA students.
More changes and procedures will be
implemented shortly
Safety and Theft
Lock your office when it is unoccupied
Lock up your valuables
To avoid identity theft, have only the
identification, phone numbs and credit cards
you will need. Leave your social security card
and medical card at home unless they will be
needed on that day. Keep a list at home of
important material you would need to replace
in case of loss.
If you are a victim of theft, make a police
report and complete an Incident Report
Safety and Violence # 1
All employees and visitors should be
treated with courtesy and respect at all
times.
Avoid Power Struggles
Attend the MANDT System Training
sponsored by AHC. Attend annual
refreshers. Human Resources will
contact you about this.
Safety and Violence #2
Any threats or acts of violence by anyone
should be reported to a a member of
management immediately.
Police or ambulance may be called by
witnesses or victims. Dial “7” for an outside
line, then 911
If 911 is called, you must notify the 1st floor
reception in order to correctly direct the
emergency personnel to the proper location.
Safety and Violence #3
Complete an Incident Report form for
any threat or act of violence.
A police report should be completed for
any threat or act of violence
You Division should have a safety planask if you don’t know what it is
Final Thoughts on Safety
The Chicago Police encourage you to
purchase a personal safety alarm from
Radio Shack. The cost is small.
Do you have any thoughts or ideas
about safety you wish to share?
