Judaism and Christianity.
Cuneiform - term

the wedge-shaped
writing of the
ancient Sumerians.

huge manytiered temple, in
ancient Sumer.
(1800BC) Nomadic Hebrews traveled
from Canaan (Palestine) to Egypt where
they are enslaved until Moses led them
back out to the Sinai Peninsula.
King David, a skilled general, made the
Kingdom of Israel a power in the Middle
East.
King Solomon transformed Jerusalem
into a magnificent capital and built a
great temple to god.
Diaspora
In 70AD the Jews revolted against Roman
rule… they lost and were scattered
throughout the world .
Judaism is monotheistic. Their God is
named Yahweh. They follow the 10
Commandments and the religious and
moral laws found in the Torah.
Rise of Christianity
Jesus was born in Palestine under Roman rule. The
Gospels tell of his life. Some Jews believed he was
the messiah (one anointed by God) who would
deliver them from foreign rule and restore the
Kingdom of Israel.
Parables
Short stories
with simple
moral lessons,
emphasizing
humility, mercy
and
unselfishness.
The Appeal of Christianity
Hope of salvation and eternal life. Control over
destiny. The poor found comfort in the belief that
people are “all equal before God”.
The early Christians were persecuted by
the Romans.
Thousands became martyrs (people who
suffer or die for their beliefs).
Christianity was organized, and high
church officials were bishops. The
Bishop of Rome took title Pope and
became the Father of the Church.
