The Middle East – lasting effects of imperialism:
 Ethnic groups like the Kurds are split up although
they would like to have an independent nation
 Other groups like the Sunni
and Shia in Iraq are put
together though they don’t
get along and fight over power.

 Persian Gulf War – military force was used to liberate
Kuwait from the Iraqi invasion in 1991: also called
operation desert storm.
 Invasion of Afghanistan, 2001: After the 9/11 attacks, the
US began a military operation in aimed at capturing the
people responsible for the attack – Al-Qaeda & Osama
bin Laden. The US overthrew the Taliban government in
Afghanistan.

 Invasion of Iraq, 2003: After the 9/11 attacks, the US
feared two things regarding Iraq:
1. that Iraq had ties to al-Qaeda, the terrorist group
responsible
2. that Iraq was building weapons of mass destruction
 As a result, we invaded the country and overthrew
the leader, Saddam Hussein.
 We found no ties to al-Qaeda or WMDs, but we did
free the nation from its dictator.

 Monotheistic - Followers believe in one God.

famine and was a total failure
 Cultural Revolution - When the Great Leap Forward
failed, Mao urged Chinese students to leave school
and attack anything that challenged his classless
society.

 North & South Vietnam reunited as one country
Outcome of the Korean War
 North and South Korea divided along the 38th parallel
(nothing really changed). North is communist, South is a
democracy.
