Glossary Builder
Monotheism-the belief that
there is only one God.
Ethical behavior-behavior
based on ideas of right and
wrong
Covenant-binding agreement
Who are the Hebrews?
At the same time of the Mesopotamian and
Egyptian civilizations, smaller groups of people
settled in close regions.
One of the groups was the Hebrews, who
followed the relgion known as Judaism. Many
of their beliefs are still followed today in many
Christian denominations!!
Let’s take a look…
MONOTHEISM
Monotheism and polytheism have the same
suffix, so what’s the difference?
Mono=one
Theism= belief in God
So monotheism means the belief in one
God
Different from the Mesopotamians and
Egyptians, the Ancient Hebrews were
distinct for believing in only one God.
Ancient Hebrews
The Hebrews practiced monotheism,
but they also followed a tradition of
ethical behavior.
They followed a very strict law code which
detailed what they could eat, how to
worship God and even where to migrate
to
These practices and beliefs became known
as Judaism, the religion of the Jewish
people. It is one of the world’s oldest
religions and one of the most influential.
The Torah
We know much about the life and customs
of the Ancient Hebrews because they had
many ancient writings which have lasted
until today.
One of the most important writings was the
Torah which you may know as the first 5
books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus,
Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy)
These books lay out the origin, history, laws,
priests and leaders and how they were
appointed.

Patriarchs
The early leaders of
the Hebrews are
known as patriarchs,
or the forefathers of
their people.
The patriarchs were
Abraham, his son
Isaac, and Isaac’s son
Jacob.
Israelites
The descendants of Abraham,
Isaac, and Jacob are known as
Israelites.
Abraham’s grandson Jacob was
renamed Israel by God. Israel
means “one who wrestled with
God.” God gave him this name
because he wrestled with an
angel of God. When he won he
demanded a blessing and he was
given the new name Israel
Abraham
Abraham lived around 1800
B.C.E., in Ur in Mesopotamia.
Later in his life, God told him to
leave his home in Ur.
He was a nomad who herded
flocks of sheep, goats, and other
livestock.
God also promised Abraham his
descendants would be greater
than the number of grains of sand:
In other words, his descendants
would be huge in number
Abraham
God told Abraham to take his people
“unto the land that I will show thee.”
So, Abraham and his family left
Mesopotamia and settled in a land east of
the Mediterranean Sea, known as
Canaan, or Israel.
Abraham and his followers first moved to
Israel so they could practice their belief in
one God.
Abraham
On this journey from Mesopotamia to Israel,
God made a covenant with Abraham.
God promised that if Abraham obeyed God’s
laws, he and his descendants would become
God’s Chosen People and God would give
them a land that would be theirs forever.
He also promised Abraham that he would be
the father of many nations.
Thus, Israel, or Canaan, became known as
the Promised Land…but it would take many
years to get there
Abraham
Abraham’s covenant with God marked the
beginning of the history of the Jewish
people.
According to the Torah, God tested
Abraham’s faith and obedience many times.
It was common at that time to offer animals
as a sacrifice to the gods; however, in his old
age, Abraham had finally fathered a son,
Isaac.
Abraham
The Torah says that one day, God tested
Abraham by telling him to make a sacrifice
of his son.
Abraham loved his son, yet his devotion to
God was so complete that he brought Isaac
to a mountain to be sacrificed.
Abraham
Last minute, God sent an angel to stop
Abraham from killing his son. Abraham had
proved his faith and obedience, and God
renewed the promise to him.
Abraham Movie Board
Abraham's influence was incredibly important in the
beginnings of the Jewish faith. It is important we
remember Abraham and his covenant with God
because we will see similar situations while we study
the ancient Hebrews.
We are going to make a movie board!!!
You need to think of 5 events from Abraham's life.
You need to write one sentence and draw a picture
for each of these 5 events.
When you are finished, you should be able to re-tell
his life with your movie board
