The Exodus
Chapter 7
Pharaohs command
• Israelites are living in Goshen in Egypt
• Pharaoh wants to deal harshly with the
Israelites cuz there are too many of
them
• They were first enslaved by Pharaoh
• Exodus 1:22 - He will kill all the male
children but the let the girls live
• Why not the Girls?
• Because they would grow up and marry the
Egyptians, thus surrendering all the good land
into Egyptian hands
1
Moses’ Birth
• Moses was hidden by his
mother and set in the
river to be found by
Pharaoh’s daughter
• She named him Moses
• Moses means “Brought
up out of the water”
2
Moses Grows up
• Moses grows up in
privilege
• His own mother is
his nurse and taught
him the faith of his
ancestors
• He knows that he is
a Hebrew boy
3
Moses’ Crime
• Moses kills an Egyptian
for beating a Hebrew
slave
• P.S. Not an accident!
• Moses runs away to the
land of Midian
• Midianites are
descendants of Abraham
4
Moses meets Zipporah
• He meets her at a well
• He defended Zipporah and her
sisters from some shepherds
and watered their flock
• Zipporoah’s father Jethro
invited him to live with them
• He married Zipporah and gave
birth to Gershom
5
The Burning Bush
• God reveals himself as the
God of Abraham, Isaac and
Jacob
• This narrows Him down to the
God of those enslaved in Egypt
• Ex 3:14 God calls himself “I
AM”
• Often in the NT Christ calls
himself “I AM” and many
become angry because they
believe him to be blaspheming.
6
Message to Pharaoh
• Exodus 5:1 “Thus says the Lord, Let
my people go, that they may
celebrate a feast to me in the
desert”
• They needed to go for 3 days to
offer sacrifice
• Important cultural note:
• Egypt worshipped god’s that were
depicted as animals
• Israel had also fallen into idol worship
7
Message to Pharaoh
• Why would they need to
go 3 days?
• Because the sacrifices
they were going to do
would have been offensive
to the Egyptians
• Israel was to be a
royal/priestly nation, the
‘first-born’ son, and
example to other nations
8
Pharaoh will not listen
• Exodus 4:21 - “I will make him
obstinate”/ “I will harden his heart”
• This means that God will let pharaoh have
his way.
• Pharaoh refuses and makes their work
harder

Passover Instructions
• One of the most important instructions
• 12:14 - all generations to come will
celebrate
• A perpetual institution
• 12:17 • 12:24 - you must observe this when you
arrive in the land God shows you
12
Passover Lamb as a “Type” of Christ
• Christ was an unblemished male whom
we now call the Lamb of God
• Jn 20:32-36 none of Christ’s bones
were broken on the Cross
• Blood of both lambs saves from death
• The sacrifice of the Lamb brings the
people out of slavery
13
What this means for us!
• We also will
participate in it
forever
• This Passover is to be
celebrated still
• How do we do this?
• In the Eucharist
• “This is the Lamb of
God who takes away
the sins of the world,
happy are those who
come…”
