And behold, two men were talking with Him; and
they were Moses and Elijah, 31 who, appearing in
glory, were speaking of His departure which He was
about to accomplish at Jerusalem. (Luke 9:30-31)

Purposes of the Book
• To Fulfill the Covenant Promise to
Abraham
• Authenticate the Ministry of Moses
• Give the Spiritual Heritage of Israel
• Instruct in Worship and Obedience
For whatever was written in earlier times
was written for our instruction, so that
through perseverance and the
encouragement of the Scriptures we might
have hope. (Romans 15:4)
Now these things happened to them as an
example, and they were written for our
instruction, upon whom the ends of the ages
have come. (1 Corinthians 10:11)
• The Early Date: 1446 B.C.
• The Late Date: 1270 B.C.
Now it came about in the four hundred
and eightieth year after the sons of Israel
came out of the land of Egypt, in the
fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel,
in the month of Ziv which is the second
month, that he began to build the house
of the LORD. (1 Kings 6:1)

1 Kings 6:1 tells us it
was 480 years from
the Exodus to the
building of Solomon’s
Temple
Reference to Rameses
can be understood as
a later “update”
The 480 years made
up of 12 generations
(12x40=480) but really
each generation was
shorter in duration
Genesis 47:11 makes
reference to the “land
of Rameses”
Exodus 1:1-5
Now these are the names of the
sons of Israel who came to Egypt
with Jacob; they came each one with
his household: 2 Reuben, Simeon,
Levi and Judah; 3 Issachar, Zebulun
and Benjamin; 4 Dan and Naphtali,
Gad and Asher. 5 All the persons
who came from the loins of Jacob
were seventy in number, but Joseph
was already in Egypt.
Deuteronomy 32:7
Remember the days of old,
Consider the years of all generations.
Ask your father, and he will inform
you,
Your elders, and they will tell you.
Deuteronomy 32:8-9
When the Most High gave the
nations their inheritance,
When He separated the sons of man,
He set the boundaries of the peoples
According to the number of the sons
of Israel.
9 For the LORD’S portion is His
people;
Jacob is the allotment of His
inheritance.
Exodus 1:6-7
Joseph died, and all his
brothers and all that generation. 7
But the sons of Israel were fruitful
and increased greatly, and multiplied,
and became exceedingly mighty, so
that the land was filled with them.
Exodus 1:8-10
Now a new king arose over
Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9
He said to his people, “Behold, the
people of the sons of Israel are more
and mightier than we. 10 Come, let
us deal wisely with them, or else they
will multiply and in the event of war,
they will also join themselves to
those who hate us, and fight against
us and depart from the land.”

Exodus 1:12-14
But the more they afflicted them,
the more they multiplied and the
more they spread out, so that they
were in dread of the sons of Israel. 13
The Egyptians compelled the sons of
Israel to labor rigorously; 14 and they
made their lives bitter with hard labor
in mortar and bricks and at all kinds
of labor in the field, all their labors
which they rigorously imposed on
them.

Exodus 1:22
Then Pharaoh commanded all his
people, saying, “Every son who is born
you are to cast into the Nile, and every

Exodus 2:1-2
Now a man from the house of Levi
went and married a daughter of Levi. 2
The woman conceived and bore a son;
and when she saw that he was beautiful,
she hid him for three months.

Exodus 2:3-4
But when she could hide him no

covered it over with tar and pitch. Then
she put the child into it and set it among
the reeds by the bank of the Nile. 4 His

Exodus 5:2-3
But Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD
that I should obey His voice to let Israel go?
I do not know the LORD, and besides, I will
not let Israel go.” 3 Then they said, “The
God of the Hebrews has met with us.
Please, let us go a three days' journey into
the wilderness that we may sacrifice to the
LORD our God, otherwise He will fall upon
us with pestilence or with the sword.”

Exodus 5:4-5
But the king of Egypt said to them,
“Moses and Aaron, why do you draw the
people away from their work? Get back to
your labors!” 5 Again Pharaoh said, “Look,
the people of the land are now many, and
you would have them cease from their
labors!”

Exodus 6:1-3
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Now
you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for
under compulsion he will let them go, and
under compulsion he will drive them out of
his land.” 2 God spoke further to Moses and
said to him, “I am the LORD; 3 and I
appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as
God Almighty, but by My name, LORD, I did
not make Myself known to them.”

Pharaoh that he let the sons of Israel go out
of his land. 3 But I will harden Pharaoh's
heart that I may multiply My signs and My

Exodus 7:4-5
“When Pharaoh does not listen to
you, then I will lay My hand on Egypt and
bring out My hosts, My people the sons of
Israel, from the land of Egypt by great
judgments. 5 The Egyptians shall know that
I am the LORD, when I

• The Failure of the Magicians
The magicians tried with their secret
arts to bring forth gnats, but they
could not; so there were gnats on man
and beast. (Exodus 8:18)
Exodus 8:18-19
The magicians tried with their secret
arts to bring forth gnats, but they could not;
so there were gnats on man and beast. 19
Then the magicians said to Pharaoh, “This
is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart
was hardened, and he did not listen to
them, as the LORD had said.
The Fourth Plague
Insects
• Another Picture of Multiplication
• A distinction between Goshen and Egypt
But on that day I will set apart the land of
Goshen, where My people are living, so that no
swarms of insects will be there, in order that
you may know that I, the LORD, am in the midst
of the land. 23 I will put a division between My
people and your people. Tomorrow this sign will
occur. (Exodus 8:22-23)

The Sixth Plague
Boils
• A Judgment upon Man and Beast
• The Impotency of the Magicians
The magicians could not stand
before Moses because of the

magicians as well as on all the
Egyptians. (Exodus 9:11).

The one among the servants
of Pharaoh who feared the
word of the LORD made his
servants and his livestock flee
into the houses; 21 but he who
paid no regard to the word of
the LORD left his servants and
his livestock in the field.
(Exodus 9:20-21)
The Eighth Plague
Locusts
• Devastation against the Crops
• A Picture of God’s Judgment
Exodus 10:13
So Moses stretched out his staff over
the land of Egypt, and the LORD directed
an east wind on the land all that day and all

that night; and when
it was morning, the
east wind brought
the locusts.
Exodus 10:19
So the LORD shifted the wind to a
very strong west wind which took up the
locusts and drove them into the Red Sea;
not one locust was
left in all the territory
of Egypt.
Pharaoh’s attempts to Negotiate
• Pharaoh makes several offers:
– Sacrifice to God here in Egypt (8:25).
– Don’t go very far away (8:28).
– Only the men can go (10:10-11).
– Don’t take your flocks or herds (10:24).
• Pharaoh’s repeated capitulations are not a
sign of true repentance. He only wishes to
avoid judgment apart from any real change.
• Pharaoh wants to remain lord.
The Ninth Plague
Darkness
• An Unnatural

Darkness
• The Darkness
of the Cross
So Moses stretched out his
hand toward the sky, and there
was thick darkness in all the
land of Egypt for three days. 23
They did not see one another,
nor did anyone rise from his
place for three days, but all the
sons of Israel had light in their

Exodus 13:17
Now when Pharaoh had let the

Exodus 14:5-7
When the king of Egypt was told
that the people had fled, Pharaoh and
his servants had a change of heart
toward the people, and they said,
“What is this we have done, that we
have let Israel go from serving us?” 6
So he made his chariot ready and took
his people with him; 7 and he took six
hundred select chariots, and all the
other chariots of Egypt with officers
over all of them.
Exodus 14:9-10
Then the Egyptians chased after
them with all the horses and chariots
of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his
army, and they overtook them
camping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon. 10 As
Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel
looked, and behold, the Egyptians
were marching after them, and they
became very frightened; so the sons
of Israel cried out to the LORD.
Exodus 14:21-22
Then Moses stretched out his
hand over the sea; and the LORD
swept the sea back by a strong east
wind all night and turned the sea into
dry land, so the waters were divided.
22 The sons of Israel went through the
midst of the sea on the dry land, and
the waters were like a wall to them on
their right hand and on their left.
He caused their chariot
wheels to swerve, and
He made them drive
with difficulty (Exodus
14:25)
Exodus 14:26-27
Then the LORD said to Moses,
“Stretch out your hand over the sea so
that the waters may come back over
the Egyptians, over their chariots and
their horsemen.”
27
So Moses
stretched out his hand over the sea,
and the sea returned to its normal
state at daybreak, while the Egyptians
were fleeing right into it; then the
LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the
midst of the sea.
Exodus 14:28
The waters returned and covered
the chariots and the horsemen, even
Pharaoh's entire army that had gone
into the sea after them; not even one
of them remained.

Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
And our sorrows He carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten of God, and afflicted. (Isaiah
53:4)
But He was pierced through for our

He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell

And by His scourging we are healed.
(Isaiah 53:5)
Exodus 17:8-9
Then Amalek came and fought
against Israel at Rephidim. 9 So Moses
said to Joshua, “Choose men for us and
go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow
I will station myself on the top of the hill
with the staff of God in my hand.”
Exodus 17:11-12
So it came about when Moses
held his hand up, that Israel prevailed,
and when he let his hand down, Amalek
prevailed. 12 But Moses’ hands were
heavy. Then they took a stone and put it
under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron
and Hur supported his hands, one on
one side and one on the other. Thus his
hands were steady until the sun set.
Exodus 17:15-16
Moses built an altar and named it
