Database model (extract)
Research questions
• Which insect have been found at specific
sites? How were these samples dated?
• What ecological landscapes do these insects
represent? How rare are they?
• Where has a particular insect been found?
And how were they dated? Through which
types of investigation (archaeology/geology)
were they found?
Faceted browsing and queries
• Facet order is arbitrary
• Facets can connect to
multiple entities
• A facet is a result and a
filter
• A selection in a facet is
filtering facets to the
right.
• Queries will populate
affected facet based on
filter in other facets
• Queries need to
connect to multiple
tables
• Query combinations are
more than possible
permutation of facets
HUMlab faceted browsing system
• Runs over normalized, relational database
models.
• The table structure need to represent the
entities and the types of relationships that
exist.
• The abstraction layer enables dynamic query
building depending on the facet’s
arrangement
