Causes - Eating Disorders
• anorexia: no clear cause; arises from a mix of
many social, emotional, physical, and biological
factors
• bulimia: again, no single cause; most people with
bulimia have difficulty managing emotions; low
self-esteem and concerns about weight and body
image play major roles; combination of genetics,
family behavior, social values, perfectionism, etc...

Symptoms - Eating Disorders
• Anorexia: extreme weight loss, fatigue, insomnia,
fainting, thinning or loss of hair, fear of weight
gain, difficulty regulating emotion, perfectionism,
distorted body image, irritability, anxiety,
depression, refusing to eat, excessive exercising,
social withdrawal and use of diet pills or laxatives.
• Bulimia: difficulty controlling food intake, pain
and discomfort, loss of taste, secret eating, hiding
food, major diet swings, visiting the bathroom
after mealtime, excessive use of diet pills or
laxatives, scrapes or calluses on knuckles,
excessive exercise.
