Anxiety Disorders
DSM IV Criteria Generalized
Anxiety Disorder

A) Excessive anxiety & worry
(apprehensive expectation) occuring more
days than not for at least 6 months . About a
number of events or activities.

B) The person finds it difficult to control the
worry
C) The anxiety and worry are associated
with 3 (or more) of the following 6
symptoms (with at least some symptoms
present for more days than not for the past 6
months)
1) Restlessness or feeling keyed up or on
edge
2) Being easily fatigued
3) Difficulty concentrating or mind going
blank

4) Irritability
5) Muscle tension
6) Sleep disturbance

D) Focus of worry is not confined to
features of an axis 1 disorder

E) The anxiety, worry or physical symptoms
cause clinically significant distress or
impairment in social, occupational or other
important areas

F) Disturbance not due to substance use,
general medical conditions or occur
exclusively during a mood disorder,
psychotic disorder or pervasive
developmental disorder.

DSM IV Criteria for Adjustment
Disorder
A) Development of emotional or behavioural
symptoms in response to an identifiable stressor(s)
occurring within 3 months of the onset of the
stressor(s)
 B) Symptoms are clinically significant as
evidenced by either of the following:
1) marked distress in excess of what would be
expected from exposure to stressor(s)
2) Significant impairment in social or occupational
functioning




C) The stress related disturbance is not merely an
exacerbation of a pre-existing disorder
D) Symptoms tdo not represent bereavement
E) Once the stressor or its consequences has
passed the symptoms do not persist for more than
6 months
Specify if acute (less than 6 months) or chronic
(more than 6 months)
Adjustment disorder can be coded with a
subtype:
- with depressed mood
- with anxiety
- with mixed anxiety and depressed mood
- with disturbance of conduct
- with mixed disturbance of emotions and
conduct
- Unspecified

