Read “Endocrine System” article and
answer questions
The Endocrine
system
Glands and hormones
The Endocrine System
Function – controls
and maintains
various body
functions with the
help of glands that
release chemicals
called hormones
The Endocrine System is made of
Glands and Hormones
Gland –a group of cells that produce
hormones (the main structure of the
endocrine system )
Hormones – chemical “messengers” made in glands
that travel through the blood to specific parts of
the body.
Called chemical messenger because they are made
at one location but travel to another to function
• Different
hormones have
different jobs.
• The job depends
on the gland they
are made in
Glands
There are 8 main glands in
the human body

Major Glands of the Endocrine system
Pituitary
Hypothalamus
Pineal Gland
Thyroid (AKA Parathyroid)
Thymus Adrenal Gland -
Pancreas –
Ovaries / Testes
Textbook Page 112B
For each gland of the endocrine system, you must know
1. Location
2. What hormones it makes and what those hormones do in
body
3. Other information dependent on gland
Major Glands of the Endocrine system
Pituitary Hypothalamus – Jose, Mason,
Pineal Gland – Tarvarya, Drew
Thyroid (AKA Parathyroid) – Eldin, Chris, Marvin, Flor
Thymus - Alfonso, Dajah, Emely, Jennifer
Adrenal Gland - Isaiah, Xavien, Shamod
Pancreas – Ramon, Guadalupe, Deaundray
Ovaries / Testes
Pituitary Gland
Location > base of the brain,
above roof of mouth
Hormone > control growth,
sexual development,
absorption of water into
blood by kidneys (how
much water the kidneys
take from the blood)
Other info > the director /
controller of the
endocrine system
Things that can go wrong…
Giantism-
oversecretion of
somatotropin
before puberty
Dwarfism-
undersecretion of
somatotropin.
Cause: tumor,
injury, infection,
genetics
Diabetes insipidus-
decreased ADH
Hypothalamus
Location > attached to
pituitary glad (in brain)
Hormones > sleep and
hunger
Other info > connection
between nervous
system and endocrine
system
Pineal Gland
Location > deep in brain
Hormones> Controls sleep
body temperature,
reproduction and aging
Other Info > size of pea,
sensitive to light
Thyroid
Location > throat,
under Adam’s apple
Hormone > growth,
metabolism and
regulation of calcium
in blood.
Other info - Thyroid
gland must have
iodine to function
Thyroid Problems
goiter- not enough iodine
hyperthyroidism
hypothyroidism
Thymus
Location > in your chest
Hormones > Controls and
creates White Blood Cells
Other info > Slowly gets
smaller over time,
important to circulatory &
immune systems
Adrenal Glands
Location > top of the
kidney
Hormones > about 30
different ones, most
important =
Epinephrine/Adrenaline
Other info = hormones
from here give you a quick
burst of energy and fight
allergies.
Pancreas
Location > beneath
stomach, connected
to small intestine
Hormone> insulin and
glucagon (regulate the
amount of glucose in
blood)
Other info > important
in digestive system
too, diabetes if it
doesn't work right
Diabetes
Cause- decreased secretion of insulin
Symptoms
Excessive thirst, excessive urination,
hyperglycemia, slow healing of skin
infections
Affects 21 million in US: 7% of population
Estimated 1/3 of people who have
diabetes don’t know it
225,000 die each year
132 billion/year- 10% of our health care
spending
Insulin was the first hormone identified (late 1920's) which
won the doctor and medical student who discovered it the
Nobel Prize (Banting and Best)
1982 - Human Insulin - First ever approved genetically
engineered human therapeutic by Genentech
Ovaries and Testes
Location > lower abdomen
Hormone > control sexual
development
Ovaries = estrogen
Testes = testosterone
Other info >
Ovaries = female
Testes = male
Homework
Write 1 paragraph (5 sentences) about what you learned
today about the Endocrine System
Warm Up – copy sentence and fill
in blank. Put HW on desk
1. Glands in the Endocrine system produce
_______________.
2. The gland that controls the amount of white
blood cells in the body is the __________
3. The _________ is the gland in both the endocrine
system and the digestive system.
1. Glands in the Endocrine system produce HORMONES.
2. The gland that controls the amount of white blood cells
in the body is the THYMUS
3. The PANCREAS is the gland in both the endocrine
system and the digestive system.

Hypothalamus
Thyroid
Thymus
Adrenal
Pancreas
Ovaries / Testes
Foldable Inside (write on flap)
* Pituitary = growth, sexual
development, absorption of
water into blood by kidneys.
The master gland
*Hypothalamus = hunger. Controls
pituitary gland’s hormones
*Thymus = creates white blood
cells that fight infection.
Important in circulatory and
immune systems
*Pancreas = insulin and glucagon >
help with blood sugar levels. In
digestive and endocrine
*Pineal = sleep, body temperature,
reproduction and aging
*Thyroid = Growth, metabolism,
regulation of calcium
*Adrenal = Epinephrine (fight
allergies)
Adrenaline ( increase heart beat)
*Ovaries / Testes =
Control sexual development
Estrogen – ovaries (women)
Testosterone – testes (men)

Glue picture to middle
Draw a line from the flap to the
gland
