What
is Chemistry?
What does the word
“conservation” mean?
Objective
SWBAT to define the Law of Conservation of
Mass and Energy
Law of Conservation
of Mass and Energy
Mass
and energy are neither created
nor destroyed during ordinary
chemical reactions or physical
changes.
They are just rearranged!
The mass of all the reactants is equal
to the mass of all the products.
The energy that goes in to the
reaction is equal to the energy that
comes out.
What is energy?
Energy
is the capacity to do work
or to produce heat.
Forms
of Energy:
Potential Energy = stored energy
Kinetic Energy = energy of
motion
Transfer of Energy
1.
2.
3.
4.
Endothermic – energy is absorbed (in)
Exothermic – energy is released (exit)
Sublimation
Condensation
Melting
Deposition
FYI
There will be a Unit 2 Quiz next Tuesday on:
Types of matter – element, compound, homogenous
mixture, heterogeneous mixture
Phases/States of matter – solid, liquid, & gas
Physical & Chemical changes
Separations
