Drill – 10/4
What
is Chemistry?
What does the word
“conservation” mean?
Objective

SWBAT to define the Law of Conservation of
Mass and Energy
Law of Conservation
of Mass and Energy
 Mass
and energy are neither created
nor destroyed during ordinary
chemical reactions or physical
changes.
 They are just rearranged!
 The mass of all the reactants is equal
to the mass of all the products.
 The energy that goes in to the
reaction is equal to the energy that
comes out.
What is energy?
 Energy
is the capacity to do work
or to produce heat.
 Forms
of Energy:
 Potential Energy = stored energy
 Kinetic Energy = energy of
motion
Transfer of Energy


1.
2.
3.
4.
Endothermic – energy is absorbed (in)
Exothermic – energy is released (exit)
Sublimation
Condensation
Melting
Deposition
FYI

There will be a Unit 2 Quiz next Tuesday on:
Types of matter – element, compound, homogenous
mixture, heterogeneous mixture
 Phases/States of matter – solid, liquid, & gas
 Physical & Chemical changes
 Separations
