Forms of
Energy short
notes
or "Hello, Mr. CENT!"
M in Mr. Cent
Mechanical energy - Involved
in movement. The total
mechanical energy = potential
energy + the kinetic energy.
kinetic = energy of movement
potential = stored energy
(We'll talk a lot more about these later!)
R in MR. CENT
Radiant energy - energy from
the sun or light sources. Also any
"waves" or "rays" (example, x-rays,
microwaves, radio/television
waves, etc.)
C in MR. CENT
Chemical energy - energy
stored in the bonds that hold
molecules together. This energy is
released during chemical reactions,
when the bonds are broken.
E in MR. CENT
Electrical energy - energy from
moving electrons. Also includes
magnetic energy.
N in MR. CENT
Nuclear energy - energy stored in the
nucleus of an atom. There are two types
of nuclear energy
Fission - the splitting apart of the nucleus
(example - in nuclear energy plants)
Fusion - the fusing together of 2 nuclei
(example - the sun)
T in MR. CENT
Thermal energy - heat energy.
This is determined by how fast the
molecules of an object are moving.
Adding thermal energy to matter will
increase the speed of the molecules;
removing thermal energy will decrease the
speed of the molecules.
