ENERGY
the ability to do
work
WORK
is done when you
use a force to
cause motion
WORK
a force is moved
through a distance

Radiant Energy
Kinetic Energy
• Energy of motion
• Examples:
KE = ½*M*V2
Gravitational Potential
Energy
• Stored energy that depends on
an object’s height
• Examples:
GPE = M*g*H
Thermal Energy
• Energy of heat
• Examples:
Chemical Potential
Energy
• Stored energy in chemical
bonds in compounds
• When released, energy can do
work
• Examples:
Elastic Potential Energy
• Stored energy of a compressed
or stretched object
• Examples:
Electrical Energy
• Energy associated with
electrical charges
• Examples:
Nuclear Energy
• Energy stored within nucleus of
an atom
• Examples:
Radiant Energy
• Energy that travels through
space in waves
• Electromagnetic Spectrum
• Examples:
Sound
• Form of kinetic energy
• – movement of energy through
substances in the form of waves

Conversion
To change from one form to
another
Remember the 8 forms of energy…
• A squirrel is walking along a
telephone wire and then he falls
off.
• I stretch a rubber band, aim it at
a student, and let it go.
• An electric toaster is used to
make toast.
• A parked car begins to roll down
the hill.
• You jump up on a trampoline.
• You plug in the microwave and
turn it on.
• A cloud is full of water.
• Eventually, raindrops fall from
the sky.
• You flip on a light switch and
the lights come on.
• Sunlight makes a flower grow.
• You eat a Power Bar before
running the mile.
• A coal-burning power plant
produces electricity.
• Person is standing on a diving
board.
• They jump off.
• A Roller Coaster goes up and
down hills.
• Gasoline in a car is burned and
the car moves.
• You light the coals in a grill,
then cook a hotdog.
• A nuclear reactor is used to
make electricity.
• I plug in a fan and turn it on.
• I plug in an electric blender and
turn it on.
• Then I eat the delicious
milkshake.
• The sun causes carrots to grow.
• A bunny eats the carrots and
hops around.
• A basketball rebounds off the
rim and hits the ground.
