ANTERIOR
ANTEBRACHIUM
Muscles
Common function:
Wrist and digital flexion.
Common origin:
Medial epicondyle of humerus.
Muscles
Superficial (from superior-inferior and
lateral-medial):
[Brachioradialis]
Pronator teres
Flexor carpi radialis
Palmaris longus
Flexor carpi ulnaris
Intermediate Muscle Group
Flexor digitorum superficialis:
To middle phalanx of digits II through V.
Deep Muscle Group
Ulnar head of pronator teres.
Flexor digitorum profundus.
Flexor pollicis longus.
To distal phalanx of thumb.
From radius and interosseous membrane.
Pronator quadratus.
Radial Artery
Smallest terminal branch of brachial artery.
Proximally lies deep to brachioradialis.
Distally becomes superficial between
brachioradialis and flexor carpi radialis.
Ulnar Artery
Middle third of forearm:
Joined by ulnar nerve.
Lies under flexor carpi ulnaris.
Distal third of forearm:
Superficial and lateral to tendon of flexor
carpi ulnaris.
Adjacent and lateral to ulnar nerve.
Ulnar Artery Branches
Anterior ulnar recurrent (to inferior ulnar
collateral)
Posterior ulnar recurrent (to superior ulnar
collateral)
Common interosseous:
Anterior interosseous
Posterior interosseous
Median Nerve
Supplies all other muscles in the anterior
compartment not supplied by the ulnar
nerve.
Functional neurological level = C7
Gives off anterior interosseous nerve.
Median Nerve Route
Crosses anterior cubital fossa medial to
brachial artery.
Passes between the two heads of the
pronator teres.
Travels between the flexor digitorum
superficialis and flexor digitorum
profundus.
Ulnar Nerve
To:
Flexor carpi ulnaris
Half of flexor digitorum profundus
Ulnar Nerve Route
From posterior compartment of brachium
Through sulcus in medial epicondyle
Into antebrachium between two heads of
flexor carpi ulnaris
Extends between flexor carpi ulnaris and
flexor digitorum profundus.
Relationships
Ulnar artery to ulnar nerve, flexor carpi
ulnaris, pisiform, Guyon’s canal.
Median nerve to flexor digitorum
superficialis and transverse carpal
ligament.
Superficial palmar branch of median nerve
to transverse carpal ligament.
Relationships
Radial artery to superficial branch of radial
nerve and brachioradialis.
Anterior interosseous nerve and artery to
pronator quadratus.
