Shaded actors from sun and rain
Represented the skys and heaven
Hut used storage and sound effects such as alarm
bells, cannon fire, thunder

Paid more to sit in this section
Wooden benches
Under a hatch roof
Protected from sun
3. OPEN YARD
Paid one penny to stand
No protection from weather
Groundlings could participate in the action of the play
Would throw food at the actors
Yelling at actors
4. TRAPDOOR
Actors playing ghost or witches
Could use to descend through this into main stage
The cellar underneath was referred to as hell
5. INNER STAGE
Used mostly for outdoor sciences
Had curtain that could be opened
or closed for scene change
6. MAIN STAGE
Where the main action of the
play took place
Especially the outdoor scenes
7. TIRING HOUSE
Dressing and Storage Rooms
Actors rested here between scenes and changed into
lavish costumes which made up for lack of props
Doors also served as actors’ main exits and entrances
8. UPPER STAGE
“ The Chamber”
Used for most bedroom and Balcony
Scenes
The balcony above was used for musicians
and sound effects
