Who Built The Theatre and when?
• Cuthbert Burbage built the wonderful theatre
• It was built in the year 1599.

 It is located in the South Side of Thames
River in the Southwark District

What was the cost to the
spectators?

The nobles would have paid for the better
seats in the Lord’s rooms and pay 5d for
the privilage. Groundlings paid one penny


The left or right or tiring area
Who were groundlings?
• People who stood on the pit and
paid one penny to watch the
plays get performed.
Costumes and Actors
The Edward Alleyn and Kempe
costumes were made or donated by
people.
What was the role of the audience?

Encourage the actors through their
appreciation and applause.
What was it used for?
 It was used for plays and it was a
gambling house.
What was the total capacity?

Cuthbert Burbage built it to hold
anywhere from 2,000-3,000 people
maximum.
