A Greek Theatre
This is a Greek Theatre
Most cities had a theatre that held more
than 15,000 people
The richer you were the closer seat you
got to the Stage/Skene
Plays and Shows
There were two kind of plays - comedy and
tragedy.
There were never in between plays of
comedy and tragedy.
The shows could last up to five hours
Here are some plays: The Persians, The
Suppliants, Cyclops and Alcestis.
Costumes
The clothes they wore usually varied
between posh clothes and poor clothes for
the different roles in the plays.
The costumes showed whether the
characters were male , female , priest
(rich or poor) and any other occupations.
Actors wore bright clothes for comedy and
dark clothes for tragedy.
Actors
All the actors were men or boys.
Dancers and singers, called the chorus,
performed on a flat area called the
orchestra.
Here are some famous Greek actors:
Araros, Hegelochus, Metrobius, Thespis.
Masks
The men had to play the role of a woman
using masks.
People claimed the masks made the voices
clearer.
Different emotions were expressed on the
masks so everybody would know if the
character was happy, sad or tired.
Greek Locations
Greek theatres were usually on hillsides
and in open air
You would see them next to temples (just
in case the posh people want to watch.)
Gods
Every play was represented by Dionysus,
the God of Theatre and wine.
Greek Theatre layout
The Parodos is where actors came on and
off.
The Skene is where actors preformed.
The Theatron is where the audience sat.
Dancers and singers, called the chorus,
performed on a flat area called
the orchestra.
Musical Instruments
Here are some instruments: Aulos, Syrinx,
Kithara, Lyre, Hydraulis.
Musical instruments were often used in
plays and shows.
The chorus played these instruments.
