and Reading
All About
• What is phonics and how we teach it

• Supporting reading
What is phonics?
Phonics is the ability to hear, identify and
manipulate sounds and know the way to write
them.
It develops the relationship between reading
and spelling.
Key vocabulary
Phoneme: a small unit of sound
Grapheme: visual representation of a phoneme- how
to write a sound
Digraph: grapheme with 2 letters
Trigraph: grapheme with 3 letters
Blend: say the sounds that make up a word and merge
the sounds together to hear the word
Segment: say a word and then break it up into the
phonemes that make it up
What makes it tricky…
English has
• 44 phonemes
• around 120 graphemes or ways of writing down
those 44 phonemes.
• 26 letters in the alphabet so some graphemes are
made up from more than one letter.
• some graphemes can represent more than one
phoneme.
