How do we teach phonics in
Reception?
The children will be taught by phonics through Jolly Phonics
songs and actions and the Read Write Inc scheme.
Initially the children will be taught set 1 of the Read Write Inc
speed sounds. In Read Write Inc phonics the individual sounds
are called speed sounds because we want the children to read
them effortlessly.
The lessons are short, fun and active. The children are praised
constantly.

Fred Talk
As soon as the children know a group of sounds they
will be introduced to Fred.
Fred speaks in pure sounds to help the children to
blend e.g. ch-i-p
We will use ‘Fred talk’ throughout the day.
Word Time
As soon as the children have learnt the first set of sounds we begin
‘word time’ at the end of the phonics session.
Green words are made using
individual sound cards and we
assist the children with
blending.
The children also use magnetic letters to make these words.
Red Words
Red words are used to help the children recognise the fact
that there are words that are tricky to read because you can
not sound them out in the normal way.
Speed sounds set 2 and 3 – The long vowels
Once your child knows all Set 1 sounds by sight and
sound and uses them to blend to read words, we
start teaching Set 2 long vowel sounds.
The children will learn the sound and a rhyme
e.g. ow, blow the snow.
The children will now have one way of spelling the
long vowels.
Set 3 Speeds Sounds
 Set 3 looks at alternative ways of spelling the same sound.
Key Points and how to help at home
 Usually four sounds will be taught a week. (letter sounds, identifying the
sounds in words, letter formation and blending)
Key Points and how to help at home
 Homework sheets will be given out on a Monday. This will include a
large copy of the sound for the children to decorate and colour as well as
the RWI handwriting sheet.
Tripod Grip – Frog leg movement
Key Points and how to help at home
 Please go over all the sounds daily
 You will each be given a pack of each set of letters. These can be
used to play several games. (Bingo, Snap, I spy and making cvc
words)
Key Points and how to help at home
 When your child is ready to read books, Tricky word cards will be
sent home and possibly word boxes.
Key Points and how to help at home
 Reading books – Initially picture books or books with a repetitive text will be
sent home to share
 Tricky word cards – To practise at home
 To read frequently for short periods
of time
Each book can be read several times.
All children will progress at a different
rate.
Reading feeds the imagination, it expands
horizons and offers new and exciting ways of
seeing and making sense of our lives and of
the world around us.
