Recap of the ideas
from Power Point 1
Spell-Write has been successful
because it is:
Flexible
• Functions effectively in a variety of
classrooms and spelling programmes
without being tied to one
Broad
• Links the Spelling Programme to
the wider classroom programme
Spell-Write’s core concepts are:
• We learn to spell to write,
to communicate with clarity
• Spelling is a writing skill
• Spelling is best mastered in the
context of learning to write
• An effective spelling programme
is balanced and meets the needs
of each student
It is easier to spell a word when:
•
•
•
•
•
•
You can use alphabetical lists to find a word
You know how to ‘Learn a Word’
You know the meaning of the word
You use the word in your writing
You know the structure of the word
You feel safe enough to take risks
• You understand the power and beauty
of words
My Favourite Words is about:
Understanding
the power and beauty
of words.
My Favourite Words
An Intimacy with Words
By taking responsibility for a growing
set of words, children are able to
develop an intimacy with words
they treasure as their own.
An Intimacy with Words
At the heart of
an effective spelling programme
is a writer who understands
the power and beauty of words.

Add a New Word
1. Students enter words into their Favourite Word List when they find
words that are fun, powerful or beautiful to them. A word they want to
treasure.
2. Reinforce the meaning of the word by uploading an artwork created by
the student that personalises the meaning of the word.

My Favourite Words and Creativity
as Literacy Tools
• Connecting
• Comprehension
Connecting
• The first word most children learn to spell is their name
because a child’s connection to a word they are learning
is a key factor in committing the word to memory.
• Providing creative activities as part of the learning process
establishes a connection to the word to be learned.
• It gives the child a chance to examine the concepts of a
word in the context of their world and their experiences.
• In this way the connection is made and learning is
enhanced.
Comprehension
• When we read and write we enter a new world in our
imagination. We imagine the places, the characters, the
events and motivations of the story through our own
inner world of our imagination.
• The greater our imagination the greater our ability to
enter this world and our ability to comprehend and
express our thoughts.
• Each word is important. Understanding the meaning,
beauty and power of each word empowers writing.
• Creative activities that challenge children to use their
imagination grows their inner world, enhancing their
empathy, understanding and memory.
