What is connotation?
 Connotation is a suggested meaning of
a given word.
What is denotation?
 Denotation is a basic or literal
dictionary meaning of a word.
Are all words connotative and
denotative?
 No, some words are almost purely
denotative. For example, it would be
hard to find any positive, negative, or
hidden meaning for the word
telephone.
What are connotative words
like?
 Connotative words, however, are more
like colors in a paint box. If you use
them poorly, the result will be muddy
and vague. If you use them well, you
can express your ideas in a vivid or
subtle way.
What are the connotations of
these words that mean “to walk”?
 saunter
 trot
 plod
 pace
 stride
hike
slog
stroll
lumber
ramble
trudge
tramp
tread
promenade
strut
When Mom got home last night, she dumped
several bags of groceries in the kitchen and the
collapsed on the living room sofa.
“I was trudging through snow all day to
meetings in different parts of the city, and then
I had to elbow my way onto a crowded bus,
getting my feet stepped on. After that, I
waited forever in line at the supermarket while
the cashier gabbed with the cashier at the next
register. I’m exhausted!”
Then dad came home. He didn’t understand
why Mom glared at him and stomped out of the
room when he asked if she wanted to go out
dancing.

 Denotation is a word’s dictionary
definition.
What is connotation?
 Connotation is the feeling or idea that
you associate with that word.
How do authors choose their
words?
 Authors choose words for what they
mean, as well as, the mood or feeling
that those words can create. The
choose the words for the effect that
they will have on the readers.

Theodore Roosevelt is remembered as
America’s twenty-sixth President. As a boy,
however, a determined Roosevelt studied
animals and insects for hours at a time and
wanted to be a naturalist. At the age of
nine, he started the “Roosevelt Museum of
Natural History” in his bedroom in his
parents’ New York City apartment. By the
age of ten, he had written an essay titled
“About Insects and Fishes, Natural History,
by Theodore Roosevelt, 1869.” Roosevelt’s
boyhood diaries reveal that his keen interest
in nature was encouraged by his family.
