Ways of learning spellings
What is a word family?
Words that are related to
each other…
Related: belonging to the same
family, group or type.
Root word
A word family can stem from a root
word. The new words aren’t always of
the same word type.
Spelling:
prefixes and suffixes
Words can be related because
of how they are written.
All these words have the suffix ‘tion’.
What are Mnemonics?
A Mnemonic is something that can
be can use to remember things.
It often takes the form of a phrase,
a short song, or something that is
easily remembered.
Mnemonics can help children with
spellings that they find difficult as it
offers a different strategy and a
way of remembering using
association.

identifying and correcting their
own mistakes.
Spelling mistakes will be indicated with
Sp or a either in the margin or at the
end of the paragraph.
Children then need to find and correct
these, using a dictionary as necessary.
