Cheating is Prohibited
Cheating is not allowed in this class.
If a student cheats, he or she will receive 0% on the
assignment, test or quiz.
This is a “Zero Tolerance” policy.
Cheating Definition
Having someone do your work, or doing someone
else’s work for them (individual assignments or in
class)
Copying someone else’s work (example: answers for
an individual assignment, test or quiz)
Having someone else take your test or quiz, or taking
someone else’s test or quiz
Looking up the answers to an assignment, quiz or test
on the internet or on your cell phone
Telling others the content of a test or quiz before they
take the test or quiz
Cheating Definition
Coping English on the internet or in a book word for
word or almost word for word and using it as your
own words. This is called plagiarism.
What is not cheating:
Working together with a classmate on a group
project
Talking with classmates outside of class in
English about an assignment
Talking with classmates in class about a
discussion topic
What is PLAGIARISM?
Plagiarism: A definition
“the use or close imitation of the language and
thoughts of another author and the representation of
them as one's own original work” [1995 Random
House Unabridged Dictionary]
Plagiarism Examples
copying a sentence or
paragraph on the internet and
putting it in your homework
without citing or quoting it.
copying someone else’s
original ideas and submitting
them as your own
paraphrasing someone else’s
words and using them as your
own
Plagiarism is
considered...
stealing
dishonest
wrong
lazy
unfair
cheating
Consequences of
Plagiarism
you learn less
you could damage your
reputation
you could fail a class or
assignment
you could lose
opportunities
Two Ways to
Avoid Plagiarism
Paraphrasing (indirect): putting another person’s
words or ideas into your own words by changing key
words and sentence structure. If you paraphrase,
you MUST cite the author.
Using “quotations” (direct) - when you want to use
an author’s exact words, you may copy the exact
words, word for word and put the words in quotation
marks (“”). If you use quotations, you MUST cite the
author.
Example of Paraphrasing
Original
Raul Fernandez: “The
computer upstairs is
broken due to the
power outage” (39).
Paraphrase
Raul Fernandez reports
that the loss of
electricity caused the
PC on the second floor
to stop working (39).
paraphrase includes original author’s name, a signal
word, and the page number of the original words
How to Paraphrase
Be sure that you have a good understanding of
the original sentence.
Use synonyms for the key words in the passage.
Change the word forms to help you change the
structure of the sentence.
Read the sentence, and then put it aside.
Imagine that you are telling a friend what you just
read.
Example of Quoting
Christine Haughney reports that “accidents caused
by using the phones dropped by 75 percent” (A8).
quoting includes original author’s name, and the page
number of the original words
When to use and how
often
Use paraphrasing and quotations for writing
assignments (papers) that require you to include
facts or ideas you read in a book, journal, article,
newspaper, etc.
Paraphrasing and using quotations should be 10% or
less of your paper.
A Listening Log...
is a summary of something you LISTENED to, not a
summary of something you READ.
Should not include any paraphrasing or direct
quotes.
is YOUR summary, not someone else’s summary or
the website’s description of the material
is used to show me your ability to listen to
something, understand it, and tell someone else
about it. Therefore, copying a summary or
description of the listening material from the internet
does NOT show me anything about your listening
ability.
A Listening Log...
is an opportunity to prove to me you understood the
material by telling me about it IN YOUR OWN
WORDS. If you copy someone else’s words online,
it only shows me that you know how to find
information on the internet. It doesn’t show me that
you really listened and understood.
I don’t want a summary because I want to know what
the material is about. I want a summary so I can see
your ideas and your words about it. The summary
is an opportunity to express yourself to me in
English. The listening material will give you
something to talk about and will help your listening
skills
