What is phonics?
• Phonics is a method of teaching children
to read by teaching them to recogonise
sounds and letters.
• Phonics is learnt through actions,
pictures, stories and sounds.
When will phonics
be taught?
Children will have a phonics session
for 20 minutes each day, this
knowledge will also help them in
other activities throughout the
day.

•We teach to read words using sound buttons.
•e.g.

To teach the phonemes we use Jolly Phonics to
help children learn the different sounds.
The sounds are taught in a specific order (not
alphabetically).This enables children to begin
building words as early as possible.
Once children are good with
single phonemes…
• DIGRAPHS – 2 letters that make 1
sound

• TRIGRAPHS – 3 letters that make

Blending
Recognising the letter sounds in a
written word, for example
c-u-p
and merging or ‘blending’ them in
the order in which they are written
to pronounce the word ‘cup’
Segmenting
• ‘Chopping Up’ the word to spell it
out
• The opposite of blending
• Use your ‘ROBOT ARMS’
Tricky Words
• Words that are not phonically decodeable
• e.g. was, the, I
• Some are ‘tricky’ to start with but will
become decodeable once we have learned
the harder phonemes
e.g. out, there
Nonsense Words
• Children will be asked to read real and
nonsense words (made up words)
• Also referred to as ‘alien’ words
• This is to help reinforce their phonics
knowledge
• They can apply their phonics knowledge to
help decode the word
• It can be a real assessment of their
phonics knowledge
Year 1 Phonics Test
• It takes place at the end of Yr1 in the
summer term.
• Children will be asked to read a selection
of real and nonsense words (alien words.)
• This will be done with the class teacher on
a 1:1 basic.
• The children will be used to already.
Pencil hold
• To encourage a tripod grip
• Pencil grips are a good
way to model where the
pencil should be held.
