Instructional Sequence for Teaching a New Word







Pronounce the word
Ask students to all repeat the word (in parts quickly)
Clarify the part of speech
Provide an accessible synonym and/or brief
explanation
Provide a visual representation (if possible) and/or an
illustrative “showing” sentence
Rephrase the simple definition, asking students to
complete the statement by substituting the new word
Assess comprehension with a brief, focused question
or task
