Vocabulary
Carolyn Kiss
What does it mean to know a word?
• I have never seen or heard this word
• I have seen this word or heard of it, but
don’t know what it means
• I have seen this word or heard it and I
understand it but don’t feel comfortable
to use it
• I know this word and use it while writing
and speaking
• (Beck, McKeown, & Kucan, 2002 p.9-10)
Three Tiers of Words
• Tier One - Basic words
• Tier Two - High utility words
• Tier Three - Words used in specific
domains
•
Example: When reading about Mount St. Helens
•
Tier One - smoke
•
Tier Two - geologist
•
Tier Three - tectonic plates
• (Collins Block, & Mangieri, 2006 p. 104)
What vocabulary should I teach?
• Is an understanding of the word
necessary for students to comprehend
the passage in which it is found?
• Can students determine the meaning of
the word themselves through structural
and/or contextual clues?
• Can learning the word help reinforce a
skill that students will need later?
• (Collins Block, & Mangieri, 2006, p. 105)
What does research say?
• Vocabulary instruction should focus on a
deep understanding of a small amount of
words
• Word selection is key, choose tier two
words to focus on
• Balance direct teaching with word
learning strategies
• (Kelley, Lesaux, Kieffer, & Faller, 2010, p. 6)
Vocabulary Building Strategies
• It is personal
• It is active
• It is flexible
• It is strategic
•“Vocabulary can be practiced through analysis and
memorization, but discovering and sharing high-level words
and technical terms that students already know creates
excitement about word study.”
• (Strickland, Galda, & Cullinan, 2004, p. 381)
• “Printed texts - including children’s
books - contained more rare words than
language used in adult and children’s
television programs and adult
conversations.” (Yopp, & Yopp, 2007, p.157)
