Curriculum overview on website (Back to School Night
packet) – Documents Section
Specials Schedule on website – “Class Schedule”
For each story we read, we have reading, phonics,
writing, spelling, and grammar activities to go along
with it.
Spend approximately one week on each story. (main
story + phonics story each week.)
New words to work on for every story. Found in the
back of the homework binder.
Sight Words:
Very important!
Children need good sight word vocabulary to be able to
read fluently and comprehend stories.
Most common words
Often can’t be sounded out (of, what, there…)
Phonics:
Used when figuring out words they don’t know (when
reading or writing)
Phonics word list to practice decoding. Don’t need to
know by sight.
Some words can’t be sounded out – Give hints!
Unit one has tear out flash cards to practice sight
words (but we don’t have them yet! No books!)
Once we get to unit 2, please put sight words on
flash cards.
Larger, easier to read. Can display (fridge, mirror, etc.)
Can mix up! If you teach the words from the list,
children will memorize them in order and may not
recognize them off the list.
Can play games with cards (memory, tic tac toe, etc.)
OK to read phonics words off word list. (No phonics
words till unit 2 – Goes along with spelling.)
Children need to see words many times before they become
part of their long-term memory.
As your stack of word cards gets larger, don’t feel like you
have to do every word every night. I recommend:
Practicing the current week’s words every night.
Each night, choose 5 or so old words to review. If your child
knows them, put them back and choose different words the
next night. If not, keep them in the pile to keep reviewing.
If there are any words your child consistently has a hard time
with, keep them in with the current week’s words till he/she is
able to recognize it.
Idea: Child-created sentence on back so he/she can use
context clues to figure it out if stuck.
Send home weekly on homework sheet. Please only do
one night at a time.
Homework sheets in front of binder; word lists in
back.
OK to periodically clean out old h.w. sheets, but save
them for a several weeks to use to review for tests.
Typical homework (Review)
New this year: “Constructive response questions” at
every grade level.

Can also get to it through www.teacherweb.com “Find a
Teacher” link or by typing in the old website address,
www. Abvmhavertown.com. (It will redirect you.)
Your child should be fever-free for 24 hours without
Tylenol before coming back to school. This is
particularly important due to the current concerns
about H1N1 (“Swine flu”). Under no circumstances
should a child be sent to school with a fever.
Making up for missed work
Can make up class work once they return to school.
Siblings/parents are not to pick up work (school policy).
If you have the homework sheet at home and your child
is feeling up to it, you can work on the words and math
homework as applicable
No work is sent home prior to vacations.
Forgotten lunches can be dropped off in the
bin under the stairs.
Other forgotten items should not be brought up to
school – Mrs. Kearney is working to establish a sense of
responsibility and forethought in the the students.
The NDS Lunch program, which was started on a trial
basis last year, will not be continued this year.
Milk and juice will be sold. NDS supplements the milk
cost – stay tuned for prices!
Please make sure your child is dressed properly for the
weather outside!
Soft balls and jump ropes are allowed on the
playground.
Small treat is fine (no drinks)
Food allergies?
If the birthday falls on a weekend, please let me know
if you plan to celebrate on nearest Friday or Monday.
Summer birthdays – Celebrate feast days whenever
possible (i.e., unless their feast day is in the summer,
too!)
Party invitations: Don’t send to school for out of
school party unless all the children of the same sex are
invited.
