How do animals help people?

to move from place to

• In the past, oxen like the
ones in the picture
helped farmers plow
fields so crops could be
grown. Why didn’t the

• Oxen used to pull wagons that were used for
transportation. Transportation is a way to
move people or things from one place to
another. Long ago, people rode horses or
sailed on ships for transportation. Today many
people use a car as their main type of

bus for transportation every day. Name some

the short o vowel sound. Today we will
learn how to make and read plurals of
these and other words. A plural is a
word that means “more than one.”
The sound you hear at the end of dogs
is /z/. Sometimes a plural ends with the
sound /z/ instead of /s/. Both sounds
are spelled with s.
The base word is top. It names one
thing. The ending is –s. It changes the
word to mean “more than one top.”

Plot
• The plot of a story includes the events that
happen, and sometimes it includes a problem
that needs to be solved.
Conventions: Predicates of Sentences
• The predicate of a sentence tells what a
person, animal or thing does. The order of the
words in a sentence must be correct to be
able to determine the predicate.
