Learning PowerPoint
Part One: Working With Words
Directions:
Click the slide icon in the section at the right to
move on to the next slide.
Important Terms
Slide: Slide is the name of the area where you put your words. The
white space that contains these words is a slide.
Text Box: Text box is the name of an area on the slide that
contains words. Click a word to see the text box.
Font: A font is an alphabet of letters that all share a common look.
Font Size: The font size tells you how big the letters are; the
higher the number, the bigger the letters will be.
Font Style: The font style changes the appearance of the letters in
some way.
How to Make a Text Box
1. Locate the Draw Tool Bar at the bottom of the screen.
2. Point on the Text Box icon, and click.
3. Click and hold on the slide where you want the text box to be,
move the mouse until the box is the right size, then release.
Now you have created an area that can contain words.
Try it!
Make a text box in the space below that looks like the example.
How to Change a Text Box
1. Point on the middle square on the right hand side of the text
box; your arrow will become a double-headed arrow.
2. Click and hold and the double-headed arrow will become a +.
Drag to the right to change the width of the text box, then
release.
Try it!
Click one of the words below to show the text box. Point on the
middle square on the right hand side of the text box. Then, click, hold,
drag to the right, and release to change the width of the text box.
Look at what happens
to the words inside of
the text box when you
make it larger. Move
the + to the left to see
what happens to the
words when you move
in the opposite
direction.
How to Move a Text Box
1. Move pointer inside the border of the text box. A four-headed
arrow will appear. Click the border, and the appearance of the
border will change indicating that it can now be moved.
2. Click and hold on the border of the text box, then drag the
text box outline to a new location. Release click to complete the
move.
Try it!
Click one of the words below to show the text box. Then, click
and hold on the border and drag it to another location on the slide.

How to Change the Way the Words Look by
Changing the Style
1. To select words to change, click and hold at the beginning of
the first word and drag to the end of the last word and release.
This will highlight the selected words.
2. To change the style of the selected words, click one of the
circled choices on the PowerPoint tool bar.
For example, if you click B (bold), your selected words will be
changed to look like this:

Click one of the words below to show the text box. Then,
highlight two or more words, and change their style by clicking one the
type style buttons on the PowerPoint tool bar.
Note: Click the same button again to change the letters back to the way
they were.

How to Change the Way the Words Look by
Changing the Font
1. Click and hold at the beginning of the first word and drag to
the end of the last word and release to highlight the selected
words.
2. To change the font of the selected words, click one of the
choices from the Font Menu on the PowerPoint tool bar.
For example, if you click Monotype Corsiva, your selected words
will change to look like this:

highlight two or more words, and change their font by selecting one of
the options from the font drop-down menu on the PowerPoint tool bar.

How to Change the Way the Words Look by
Changing the Font Size
1. To select words to change, click and hold at the beginning of
the first word and drag to the end of the last word and release.
This will highlight the selected words.
2. To change the font size of the selected words, click one of the
choices from the Font Size Menu on the PowerPoint tool bar.
For example, if you click 34, your selected words will change to
look like this:
Try it! Click one of the words below to show the text box. Then, click and
hold, drag and release to highlight some of the words and practice
changing font size.

Below is a secret message. Can you decode it?
Good for you! The secret was all in
the font. While most fonts are
alphabets, some fonts are
collections of little pictures
that people can use to decorate
their writing. Just as you can
change fonts to change the way that
the words look, you can also change
fonts to hide all of the words in a
message.
