Los Adjetivos
What are adjectives?
Adjectives are words we use to describe
ourselves, somebody else, or something
else with.
In Spanish, adjectives must “agree” in:
1. Gender
2. Number
Los Adjetivos
Gender:
NOUNS have a gender in Spanish. They
are either
1. Masculine
2. Feminine
Masculine nouns begin with the word: el
and end with the letter: o
Feminine nouns begin with the word: la
and end with the letter: a
Los Adjetivos
To make an adjective “agree” with a noun in
gender, ask:
1. Is the noun masculine or feminine?
el chico= masculine
la chica= feminine
2. What do I have to do to the adjective to
make it match?
The adjective should end with the
SAME letter as the noun!
Los Adjetivos
Number:
NOUNS also have a quantity. They are either:
1. singluar
2. plural
Singular nouns begin with the words: el/la
and end with the letters: o/a
Plural nouns begin with the words: los/las
and end with the letters: os/as
Los Adjetivos
To make an adjective “agree” with a noun in
number, ask:
1. Is the noun singular or plural?
los chicos= plural
las chicas= plural
2. What do I have to do to the adjective to
make it match?
The adjective should end with the SAME
letter as the noun!
Los Adjetivos
Watch out! The word order in Spanish is
DIFFERENT than the word order in
English.
Instead of saying, “the quiet girl”, the
Spanish words look like, “the girl quiet.”
ex: the quiet girl= la chica callada
the serious boys= los chicos serios
Los Adjetivos
Think of these rules like a puzzle!
If you make the letters match, you know you
got it right.
Practice:
la niña, tacaño: la niña tacaña
los perros, serio: los perros serios
el gato, generoso: el gato generoso
las chicas, atrevido: las chicas atrevidas
