6 Word
Memoirs
Watch the following clip and think
about the stories being told in just
six words.
Underneath your summary on the back
of your memoir notes, answer the
following questions:
➔What emotions came to mind when
you were watching the clip?
➔What makes six words so powerful?
In November 2006, Larry Smith issued a
challenge to fans of his Web publication,
SMITH Magazine.
Where did this
begin?
He was inspired by Ernest Hemingway's
legendary shortest of short stories "For sale:
Baby shoes, never worn".
The Six-Word Memoir contest officially ended after
a month, but the stories kept coming.
Five years after the contest ended, participants
continued to contribute more than half a million
mini-memoirs.
Smith has published five compilations of the
intensely personal accounts and continues his
online quest to spark the creativity of aspiring
writers.
"There is inspiration everywhere," he says.
"Even if you don't think you're a storyteller,
you are."
★ List as many words, topics, memories, or
personality traits as you can about yourself –
activities you do, items, belongings, places you
like, and feelings you have.
Start With A
List!
★ Don’t edit, cross out, change, or rewrite words.
Don’t worry about spelling – JUST WRITE! You
are BRAINSTORMING for your memoir.
★ Circle SIX WORDS that stand out.
★ Use these words to create THREE different 6
word memoirs.
★ Once you’ve finished your three memoirs, have
some of your group members review your ones
to help you decide on your final version.
