History
Is believed to have been active for about 2,500 years
Ancient Egyptian drawings showed people with what appeared to be the
main features of scabies
Giovan Cosimo Bonomo drew scabies in 1687 and is credited with first
discovering the mite that caused it, along with Diacinto Cestoni
Transmission
Transmitted through direct contact with a person with scabies
Often transmitted between sexual partners
Common outbreaks occur in crowded institutions such as nursing homes
and prisons, as well as child care facilities and hospitals
People infested with scabies who are healthy and asymptomatic can still
transmit it
Can also be transmitted by bedding or clothes
The female scabies mites dig and lay their eggs under the epidermis
Symptoms
Intense itching and a pimple-like skin rash caused by an allergic
reaction to the parasite and its feces under the skin
The rash and itching are mainly known to occur between the fingers
and on the wrist, elbow, armpit, penis, nipple, waist, buttocks, and
shoulder blades, and also on the head, face, neck, palms, and soles of
infants and young children with scabies
Burrows made by the scabies mites tunneling beneath the skin’s
surface can sometimes be seen, usually in and on the webbing of the
fingers, the skin folds of the wrist, elbow, and knee, and the penis,
breasts and shoulder blades
Scratching of the itch can cause skin sores that can become infected
with bacteria which can lead to kidney inflammation
Treatment
Medications that remove and kill scabies mites (and sometimes their
eggs) are called scabicides
Scabicides in the form of lotion or cream should be applied to all parts
of the body starting from the neck down, unless used on an infant or
small children in which it should be applied to all parts of the body;
after a recommended amount of time the lotion or cream should be
washed off
Used bedding, clothing, and towels should be washed in hot water and
dry-cleaned, or sealed in a plastic bag for 2-3 days since scabies mites
cannot survive that long separated from human skin
Infected skin sores should be treated with an antibiotic
Retreatment should be applied if intense itching still occurs after 2-4
weeks after treatment and if burrows and the rash still appear
Other Facts
It is an ectoparasite
It is not emerging because it could affect anyone in any place or at any
