Anatomy of the skin
• 3 main layers
Take care of the skin
• Healthy skin normal PH between 4.3 and 5.9
• Microorganisms on the skin can effect the PH
• Additionally, prolonged contact with fluid, can
increase the permeability of the skin
• Fecal enzymes damage the epidermis and be
very caustic to the skin
• Briefs and pad help retain moisture and heat
Does this look familiar?
How many pads were on this pt?
Do we really need a brief?
Did we need a brief and pads for
him?
“JUST IN CASE” OF WHAT?
Remember:
• ONLY use ONE air flow pad
• Greatly decreases flow of air causing
diminished offloading of bed
• Be the patients advocate- don’t use the pads
and briefs unless the patient REALLY needs it
